Chainmail Chausses were used as leg protection in the late Middle Ages. They were usually worn in addition to the plate armour, prevalent in those days. The body parts left uncovered by the plate armour would be protected with chain mail armour. Unlike the comparatively stiff plate armour, the Chausses are notably more flexible and fit much better to the body shape.
The chainmail chausses from Ulfberth® are supplied in pairs. They are now available in almost all chain maille types. They can be fastened as seen fit, e.g. with wire, fingerloop braids, leather strings and/or leather straps (not included in delivery). They can also be sewn on (leather) trousers.
The BTW chain maille type: This particular mesh is composed of butted rings made of high-quality spring steel. Considering its excellent value at a fair price,it is perfectly suitable for unexperienced re-enactors who set store on good protection and solid quality. The weave is 4 in 1. This type is called BTW (Butted Tensile Wire). Although the natural finish allows rust to develop, it also gives the weave a genuine appearance.
