Medieval Gauntlets from the Battle of Visby, 14th c., Type III
Steel and Leather, various colours
These brigandine gauntlets are based on a find (no. 3) from the battle site of Korsbetningen (island of Gotland, Sweden), just outside the city walls of Visby, where an army of Gutnish yeomen and peasants fighting against the conquest of Gotland by the Danes was crushed by the forces of King Valdemar IV of Denmark (Valdemar Atterdag) on July 27th, 1361.
The battle gauntlets we offer here are hand-forged from 1.5 mm thick steel. The small steel plates that form the large cuff, the back of the hand and the fingers are encased in sturdy leather and held in place with steel rivets. The protective upper features additional metal plates on the outside (covering the knuckles, the entire thumb and parts of the fingers), and is stitched onto a soft leather glove. For a comfortable, custom fit at the wrist, the long sewn-on cuff is equipped with an adjustable leather strap and a brass buckle.
This pair of articulated leather and plate gauntlets offers a combination of safety, freedom of movement and wearing comfort. It is most fitting for late medieval settings and particularly well-suited for the representation of a 14th c. northern European warrior. An ideal accessory for re-enactment and LARP!
